Additional Info

  • Description:

Fr. Riccardo placed a large print of Rembrandt’s Return of the Prodigal Son near the ambo. He referred to the painting a number of times throughout the 3 evenings.

On the first night he spoke about the characteristics of older Jewish men of that time. They ruled their homes, they did not run. He spoke of the prodigal son who wished his father were dead and how, once he obtained his inheritance, he squandered it in foreign lands.

But, the father missed his son. He spend hour daily studying the horizon for a sign of him. Fr. Riccardo helped us observe the welcoming, embracing, prodigal FATHER, our Heavenly Father, who welcomes us home no matter how long we’ve been gone.

On the second night of the mission, the son has returned – still hungry and dressed in rags. The townspeople are upset with him. His brother is upset with him, but his father is overjoyed to have him back. Fr. Riccardo continues the story and takes us deeper into our Father's house.

As is his tradition, Fr. Riccardo celebrated Mass on the final evening. In his extended homily he tied together the two previous talks. He talked about the life of the exiles who make up the parish and the gifts and talents that the members have been given by our Lord, and – he looked into the future and discussed making use of technology to help spread the Gospel.
